Background
An effective solution for rapid identification of healthcare-associated infection (HAI) by C. difficile
C. difficile is a bacterium that can cause nosocomial intestinal infections with symptoms of varying severity. C. difficile infections are more frequent in immunocompromised and debilitated subjects, and are especially due to prolonged antibiotic therapies.
This bacterium can be found in normal colonic flora of 2-5% of healthy adults and up to 70% of neonates. Approximately 20-40% of patients hospitalized for more than 2 days become colonized with C. difficile.
ACG Clinical Guidelines (USA) define a 2 step algorithm for diagnosing CD, as also recommended by ESCMID Clinical Guidelines (EU).
The Diasorin LIAISON® C. difficile Diagnostic Solution has a CLIA test for each step:
1st step: the detection of GDH as a screening method.
2nd step: the detection of toxins as a confirmatory method.
