Pneumococcal pneumonia is the most common type of bacterial pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is a normal colonizer of the upper respiratory tract. Streptococcus pneumoniae causes different types of acute, invasive, and non-invasive clinical infections, and is the most frequently detected pathogen responsible for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Pneumococcal pneumonia is accompanied by bacteraemia in 10-30% of cases.
