Disease state

Respiratory tract infections involve a wide variety of etiologic agents, and present with overlapping signs and symptoms. Prediction of the causative organism based on clinical findings alone is not reliable. The most frequent agents responsible for respiratory infections are respiratory viruses, and then bacteria.
